Nanotechnology is the assembly, manipulation and control of materials at the atomic and molecular scale to fabricate structures, devices and systems that have novel properties and functionality. Dubbed as the next big thing, nanotechnology has already triggered revolutions in the areas of engineering, sciences, medicine, and environment. The creation of Nanotechnology Engineering at Waterloo is yet another milestone in keeping our University's tradition of being aware and responsive for the needs of the society.
Nanotechnology engineering is a multi-disciplinary engineering field which simultaneously draws from and benefits areas such as materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, and biology. Indeed, it is all about generating new solutions based on atomic- and molecular-scale manipulations.
The Nanotechnology Engineering honors degree program is designed to provide a practical education in key areas of nanotechnology, including the fundamental chemistry, physics, and engineering of nanostructures or nanosystems as well as the theories and techniques used to model, design, fabricate, or characterize these technologies. Emphasis is placed on training with modern instrumentation techniques as used in the research and development of these emerging technologies.

In July 2007, the UCSD campus created the Department of NanoEngineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering. This new department is dedicated to research and graduate and undergraduate education in the interdisciplinary field of nanotechnology. A new undergraduate degree program in NanoEngineering is under development and is expected to debut in Fall 2010 (estimate). Until the degree proposal is accepted and finalized, department of nanoengineering is unable to offer guidance on required courses. The department will focus on research and education in the areas of biomedical nanotechnology, molecular and nanomaterials, computational nanotechnology, and nanotechnologies for energy conversion.
The NanoEngineering Department at the UCSD Jacobs School aims to build an undergraduate program that will address those topics in a comprehensive way. The curriculum will address fundamental chemical and physical issues that arise when engineers work at the nanoscale. Faculty will foster the kind of stimulating multidisciplinary environment where cutting-edge discoveries are made. This innovative approach goes to the heart of the Jacobs School's style of research and education. Graduates of this program will become leaders in the evolving nanotechnology industry and benefit new and existing enterprises in the region and nation.
